The City of Glendale is inviting all residents to participate in the Free Compost Giveaway on Saturday, October 11, 2025, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Lot 30 (1255 N. Verdugo Road, Glendale, CA). This event is part of Glendale’s ongoing effort to promote environmental sustainability, waste reduction, and healthy gardening practices throughout the community.

Organized in partnership with NASA Services and @MyGlendale, the event gives residents a chance to take home nutrient-rich compost created from recycled organic material. Compost is an excellent soil amendment that helps gardens thrive, conserves water, and keeps valuable green waste out of landfills.

What Is the Glendale Compost Giveaway?

The Glendale Compost Giveaway is a free, self-serve event that provides residents with high-quality compost—made right here in California from food scraps, green waste, and other organic materials collected through Glendale’s curbside recycling programs.

By attending, residents close the recycling loop: what begins as kitchen scraps and yard trimmings comes back as nutrient-dense compost to help local gardens and landscapes flourish. It’s a perfect example of how sustainable living benefits both individuals and the environment.

Why You Should Participate

1. Improve Your Soil Naturally

Compost improves soil structure, increases moisture retention, and provides essential nutrients to support stronger root systems. Whether you’re maintaining a backyard garden, refreshing your landscaping, or starting a new planting project, compost is one of the best natural soil enhancers available.

2. Support Glendale’s Sustainability Goals

Each year, tons of organic material are collected from Glendale homes and businesses. Instead of going to landfills, this waste is transformed into compost through regional recycling programs. By picking up and using this compost, residents help complete the organics recycling cycle and contribute to the City’s zero-waste initiatives.

3. Save Money While Going Green

Instead of purchasing store-bought fertilizers or bagged compost, residents can take advantage of this free resourceprovided by the City of Glendale. It’s an easy and affordable way to garden sustainably.

4. Protect the Environment

Using compost reduces the need for chemical fertilizers, supports biodiversity in your soil, and helps sequester carbon—all small actions that add up to a cleaner, greener Glendale.

How the Compost Giveaway Works

  1. Arrive at Lot 30 during event hours.

  2. Follow directional signage and City staff instructions.

  3. Park safely and load compost into your own containers using your shovel.

  4. Drive away knowing you’ve helped reduce waste and improve your garden.

It’s that simple—no pre-registration required.

A Community Effort

This event is part of the City of Glendale’s broader commitment to sustainability and community engagement. Through partnerships with NASA Services and the City’s Recycling Division, Glendale continues to expand programs that empower residents to recycle more, waste less, and give back to the environment.

The Compost Giveaway complements other local initiatives, including community clean-ups, household hazardous waste collections, and paper shredding events—all designed to make it easier for residents to live sustainably.

Get Involved

Residents are encouraged to spread the word to friends, neighbors, and local gardeners. Together, Glendale residents can play an active role in creating a cleaner city and a healthier planet.
